Can An Organized Office Lead To Higher Workplace Satisfaction?

By Alex Patterson In Organization |

If you haven’t done so already, organizing your office should become a top priority.  It may be frustrating and feel like a waste of time, but in reality office organization can lead to higher efficiency and work-place satisfaction.

Start with the big picture – your entire office area.

Don’t be stingy with your storage space; if you can’t fill it now, you certainly will be able to as your business grows.  BE EFFICIENT – think about what you have in your office and find appropriate sized cabinets and desks.  When it comes to filing papers, you know best! Whether you organize alphabetically or chronologically, we suggest adding colors to your files for further distinction.  Never underestimate the power of labeling.  Be specific in labeling all cabinets and your employees won’t waste any time finding their work-place tools.

Protect your wires!

With all the new technology available, you need to be increasingly aware of cables and cords snaking around the floor.  And when it comes to moving and adding new computers, tangled cords are the last thing you want.  Luckily, we have plenty of options for you!  For those high-tech offices, cable hose carriers are your best bet.  These carriers can run numerous cables up the wall or along the ceiling.  If you’re looking for something to hide your cables, try a raceway.  These trendy cord holders enclose your cables and run nicely along floorboards.  If you’re looking for a cheap solution, buy Velcro wraps to bundle your cords nicely.

Getting personal – organizing your desk.

Sounds like a daunting task!  Our advice: take it one day at a time.  Every day before you leave, throw away at least one item.  It can be trash (no need to leave that!), an old pen, or meeting notes that you’ve already turned into a memo.  On a weekly basis, take inventory.  On Friday, ask yourself if your office looks like it did on Monday?  Take ten minutes to file papers you used throughout the week, put business card information into your address book, and reorganize supplies that may be out of place.  On a monthly basis, organize or delete emails, go through papers and throw out anything that has passed deadlines.  Every once and a while, take a step back and look at your work area.  Notice that ugly plant mom got you as an office warming gift?  Its okay to get rid of it…she’ll probably never know!  And most importantly – GO GREEN.  Everyone is doing it.  Exchange the notepads for electronic post-its and task lists.  Your desk will look nicer and mother earth won’t complain!
